Thanks for bringing RASCAL to your area! The need for low-cost veterinary care is so great around the state and we are thrilled to be a part of the solution to ending the cycle of homeless and unwanted pets. The Unit. RASCAL is a fully equipped mobile animal hospital. We are completely self contained and carry our own staff and supplies. We have running water on board and generate our own electricity throughout the day. Coordination. Each individual group has their own way of conducting RASCAL clinics based on their resources. For example, if we are visiting a full functioning humane society with housing capabilities for patients and reception staff, then they may schedule one drop off to ensure that all clients are checked in by a certain time. If we are visiting an area with only one organizer and no housing facility, staggered drop off times work best to enable our staff and available volunteers to greet clients in a timely manner. In our experience, staggered drop off times have been the best way to handle a RASCAL day. For example: 9:00: 5 appointment drop offs 9:20: 5 appointment drop offs 9:40: 5 appointment drop offs 10:00: 5 appointment drop offs Ect… (see schedule example in this folder) When out of town, we rely heavily on volunteers from the local host group to handle the intake of money and counsel pet owners on post-operative care. RASCAL staff is always available to answer questions and assist in any way possible, but any help available is greatly appreciated. Minimum Requirements. Because we carry full staff and incur a lot of expenses when traveling, we must meet a minimum monetary requirement of 1600.00 to visit an area. If the schedule is full, areas will have no problem meeting this goal. In many cases, groups double this amount! If this minimum is not met, we must hold the individual group responsible for making up the difference. Please note that RASCAL is not looking to “profit” from rescue groups in any way, but we must pay staff, keep supplies, and gas up the unit. The need is out there to keep us busy, so when our schedule is full of empty spay/neuter slots we feel that our resources and time are best spent elsewhere. In addition, we have had to implement a 2.00 per surgery gas surcharge as of 06/01/08. RASCAL will balance out at the end of the clinic day. We cannot extend credit and payment in full is expected on the day of the clinic. Payment can be handled from clients in one of two ways:
(see RASCAL Overview for our scheduling requirements) After the Clinic. Because of the nature of our clinic, RASCAL cannot be responsible for post surgical care. Each patient goes home with post-operative instructions, but must understand that they are responsible for following those instructions and must seek veterinary care in the area if they have any questions after the procedure. We are happy to answer any questions they have the day of the clinic. Please note that the phone number for RASCAL is an appointment line only and must NOT be called in case of an emergency. We take our limitations into consideration and will not perform surgery on an animal we believe will be a high risk for complications after the surgery. (Sick or emaciated animals, large and obese animals in heat, or other patient issues at the doctor’s discretion) Other Services. RASCAL can offer other services and products to the public within the scope of our clinic. These include prescription flea medication, heartworm testing and prevention, prescription de-worming, and others. We have partnered with VetCentric, an online pharmacy that is run by pharmacists and endorsed by veterinarians to enable us to have access to a large range of antibiotics, special diets, and thousands of other products that a stand alone veterinary hospital would provide. As a result, we are able to bring general veterinary care to areas with little or no access. Please contact us if you have further questions. See you in the field! RASCAL is a 33 foot truck. We will need plenty of parking space on level ground. · We are able to accommodate 30 “pack” surgeries.* A pack surgery is one of the following:- Cat spay - Dog spay - Dog neuter - Rabbit spay** - Rabbit neuter** Cat neuters, dental procedures, and vaccination clients do not count towards our surgery day. Feel free to schedule as many of these as necessary, up to 60 total animals. (**because of the amount of time rabbit surgeries consume, a maximum of 2 rabbits should only be scheduled on a full clinic day.)· If you are doing a day with both cat and dog surgeries, a building is helpful to house the animals while they are waiting for surgery. Barking dogs can stress cats and create an unsafe environment in the close quarters of the unit. · If you are doing a clinic day with only dog surgeries, a building is helpful with holding crates if there are more than 5 dogs over 40 pounds. We have some large holding cages on the unit and can safely accommodate a few large dogs. Small and medium sized dogs can be held on the unit with no problem. · Make sure all required paperwork is completely filled out by the client. All paperwork must to be signed before our staff can perform any procedure on any animal. · RASCAL Staff will automatically vaccinate any surgery patient that does not have proof of a current rabies vaccine for 7.00. This includes cats. (Not rabbits) The proof must be in the form of a rabies vaccination certificate from a licensed veterinarian or records from a veterinary office. A rabies tag does not serve as sufficient record that the animal has been given the vaccine, as tags and collars can be interchanged between animals. · For the safety of our staff and the animals, all feral cats must be brought in a trap. We cannot make any exceptions to this rule.
The Day of the Clinic RASCAL Staff works the entire day. Please let clients know that they may not pick up their pet until 7:00 or 8:00 in the evening. · Cat carriers and dog crates must be tagged with labels. We take patients in based on the first to arrive, so they need to be numbered in the order that they checked in. · Groups should have one or two volunteers on hand throughout the day to answer questions from the public and help with check in/check out. It is an immense help to our staff to have local members of the shelter on hand during the day. · Vaccine clinic will be done throughout the day starting at 12:00 p.m. Vaccine only clients should be staggered to prevent long wait times for services.
